Frequently Asked Questions

Your boiler is one of the most essential components of your home's heating system, working tirelessly to provide warmth and comfort. Determining the right time to replace it can be a challenging decision, with various factors to consider depending on your specific needs. Much like children, some boilers may serve reliably for decades, while others may need replacement sooner.

The decision to invest in a new boiler is significant, typically lasting around 20 years or more. Therefore, it's crucial to conduct thorough research and ask pertinent questions before making a decision. Today's boilers are part of integrated HVAC systems designed to address air quality concerns and enhance home comfort.

When selecting a new boiler, the brand and model are important considerations, but equally vital is the expertise of the company handling installation, warranties, and ongoing servicing. The quality of installation and after-sales support significantly impacts the performance and longevity of your boiler system. Therefore, it's wise to prioritize choosing a reputable and reliable service provider for your boiler replacement needs.

The decision to repair or replace a boiler can depend on several factors, including the age of the boiler, the cost of repairs, the availability of replacement parts, and the efficiency of the current system compared to newer models. Here are some considerations to help you make an informed decision:

  1. Age of the Boiler If your boiler is relatively new and still under warranty, repairing it might be the most cost-effective solution. However, if it's older, especially beyond its expected lifespan (usually around 15-20 years), replacement might be more economical in the long run.

  2. Cost of Repairs Evaluate the cost of repairs needed. If the repair cost is significant, say more than 50% of the cost of a new boiler, investing in a new, more efficient model might be better.

  3. Efficiency Newer boiler models are generally more energy-efficient, leading to lower heating bills. If your current boiler is inefficient, upgrading could save you money over time.

  4. Frequency of Breakdowns If your boiler has needed frequent repairs in the past few years, it's likely that these repairs will continue to be necessary. In this case, replacing it might be more cost-effective than facing ongoing maintenance costs.

  5. Availability of Parts For older boilers, finding replacement parts can be difficult and expensive. If parts are hard to come by, this might tip the scale towards replacement.

  6. Environmental Considerations New boilers are not only more efficient but also better for the environment as they emit fewer pollutants. If reducing your carbon footprint is important to you, upgrading to a newer model could align with your environmental goals.

  7. Safety Older boilers can pose safety risks, such as carbon monoxide leaks. If there are any safety concerns with your current boiler, replacing it should be a priority.

  8. Professional Advice Consulting with a heating professional can provide insight into the condition of your boiler and whether it's more prudent to repair or replace it. They can assess the efficiency, safety, and overall condition to give you a tailored recommendation.

Ultimately, the decision should balance upfront costs with long-term savings, efficiency, and safety. If a repair can extend the life of your boiler significantly without risking safety or efficiency, it might be worth it. However, if repairs are costly and only a temporary solution, investing in a new boiler could be more economical and provide peace of mind.

Repairing a 20-year-old boiler often leans towards being less cost-effective for several reasons:

  1. Age and Efficiency By the time a boiler reaches 20 years, it is likely operating far below the efficiency of newer models. Technological advancements in the past two decades mean current boilers use less fuel for the same amount of heat, translating to lower energy bills and a smaller carbon footprint.

  2. Frequency of Repairs An older boiler is more likely to need frequent repairs as components wear out. These repairs can become more frequent and expensive over time, making it less economical to keep the old boiler running compared to investing in a new one.

  3. Availability of Parts For boilers of this age, manufacturers may have stopped producing replacement parts, making them harder to find and potentially more expensive. This can increase the cost of repairs and the time it takes to get your heating system back up and running.

  4. Safety Concerns Older boilers may not meet current safety standards. Wear and tear over the years can lead to issues like gas leaks or carbon monoxide production, posing serious health and safety risks.

  5. Energy Costs An inefficient boiler increases energy consumption, leading to higher energy bills. Investing in a new, energy-efficient boiler can significantly reduce these costs over time, offsetting the initial investment.

  6. Environmental Impact Newer boilers are designed to be more eco-friendly, producing less carbon dioxide and contributing to efforts to combat climate change.

Given these considerations, while repairing a 20-year-old boiler might provide a short-term solution, it is often not the most cost-effective or safest option in the long run. Upgrading to a new, energy-efficient model can offer better reliability, lower operating costs, improved safety, and a reduced environmental impact. Consulting with a heating professional can give you a clearer picture of your options, taking into account the specifics of your home and heating needs.

The lifespan of a boiler can vary depending on several factors, including the type of boiler, how well it's maintained, and the quality of installation. Generally, a well-maintained boiler can last anywhere from 15 to 30 years or more. Here are some factors that can affect the lifespan of a boiler:

  1. Type of Boiler Different types of boilers have different lifespans. For example, traditional cast iron boilers tend to have a longer lifespan compared to modern condensing boilers. Electric boilers may also have a longer lifespan due to fewer moving parts.

  2. Quality of Installation A properly installed boiler is more likely to have a longer lifespan. Poor installation can lead to issues such as improper sizing, inadequate venting, and inefficient operation, which can shorten the boiler's lifespan.

  3. Maintenance Regular maintenance is essential for prolonging the life of a boiler. This includes annual inspections, cleaning, and servicing by a qualified technician. Neglecting maintenance can lead to premature wear and failure of components.

  4. Water Quality The quality of the water used in the boiler system can also affect its lifespan. Hard water, for example, can cause scale buildup in the boiler's heat exchanger, reducing efficiency and potentially causing damage over time.

  5. Usage Patterns The frequency and intensity of boiler use can impact its lifespan. A boiler that is used heavily may wear out more quickly than one that is used infrequently.

  6. Environmental Factors Environmental conditions such as exposure to harsh weather, high humidity, or corrosive substances can affect the longevity of a boiler.

It's important to keep in mind that while boilers can last for many years, they will eventually wear out and require replacement. Regular maintenance and proper care can help maximize the lifespan of a boiler and ensure efficient and reliable operation for as long as possible.

The biggest cause of boiler breakdowns is often a lack of regular maintenance and servicing. Neglecting routine maintenance can lead to several issues that may cause a boiler to fail prematurely. Here are some specific factors that contribute to boiler breakdowns due to inadequate maintenance:

  1. Sludge and Scale Build-up Over time, water circulating in the system can deposit minerals and other substances inside the boiler and its components, leading to sludge and scale build-up. This build-up can reduce water flow, decrease heat exchange efficiency, and even lead to overheating and damage to the boiler's internal parts.

  2. Corrosion Corrosion is another significant issue that can cause boiler breakdowns. Oxygen in the water can corrode metal components, leading to leaks and failures. Regular maintenance includes checking for signs of corrosion and taking preventive measures.

  3. Component Wear and Tear Components within the boiler, such as pumps, valves, and heat exchangers, can wear out over time. Without regular checks and replacements, worn components can fail, causing the boiler to break down.

  4. Ignition and Pilot Light Failures For gas boilers, issues with ignition systems or pilot lights can cause breakdowns. These problems can stem from faulty components, dirt buildup, or system malfunctions. Regular servicing includes checks and cleaning of these critical parts.

  5. Pressure Problems Incorrect water pressure, whether too high or too low, can lead to boiler malfunctions. Leaks or failures in the pressure relief valve can cause pressure issues. Regular maintenance helps ensure the system is operating at the correct pressure.

  6. Blocked Condensate Pipe For condensing boilers, the condensate pipe can freeze in cold weather or become blocked, leading to boiler shutdowns. Regular checks can help prevent this issue, especially in colder climates.

  7. Thermostat Problems Faulty or incorrectly calibrated thermostats can cause boilers to operate inefficiently or not at all. Regular servicing can identify and correct any thermostat issues.

Regular maintenance by a qualified professional not only helps prevent these issues but also ensures the boiler operates efficiently, extends its lifespan, and can identify potential problems before they lead to breakdowns. It's recommended to have your boiler serviced annually to keep it in good working condition and to avoid the inconvenience and cost of unexpected repairs.

The time it takes for a plumber or heating engineer to fix a boiler can vary widely depending on the nature of the problem, the availability of parts, and the specific model and age of the boiler. Here's a general guideline:

  1. Minor Repairs For simple issues such as replacing a thermostat, fixing a leak, or unclogging a condensate drain, repairs might take anywhere from 1 to 3 hours. These repairs are straightforward and can usually be completed in a single visit, provided the necessary parts are on hand.

  2. Intermediate Repairs Issues like replacing a circulating pump, fixing or replacing a motorized valve, or addressing electrical faults can take between 2 to 4 hours. These repairs are more complex and may require the plumber to have specific parts available.

  3. Major Repairs For more significant issues, such as replacing a heat exchanger or fixing a severe leak within the boiler's internal components, the repair can take anywhere from 4 to 8 hours or more. These types of repairs are intricate, and the time required can also depend on the availability of specific parts. In some cases, parts may need to be ordered, which could delay the repair.

  4. Replacement If the boiler needs to be replaced, the process can take a full day or possibly longer, depending on the complexity of the installation and whether any adjustments to the piping or venting are necessary.

It's important to note that these are rough estimates, and the actual time can vary. Some factors that can influence repair times include:

  • Diagnostic Time Diagnosing the problem accurately can sometimes take a while, especially for intermittent faults or when the boiler has multiple issues.

  • Part Availability If the required parts are not readily available and need to be ordered, this can delay the repair.

  • Boiler Model and Age Older or less common models might have parts that are harder to find, and repairs can be more time-consuming.

  • Access and Location The ease of access to the boiler and its components can also affect repair time. Boilers in tight spaces might take longer to repair due to the difficulty of accessing certain parts.

Finana helped with our furnace when it was causing us issues. The team was extremely flexible and accommodating. The guys who came to help out were absolutely professional and super friendly. The team explained what was going wrong, what my options were, and didn't push or try to sell me anything I didn't need yet. When the time does come (hopefully longer than sooner) to replace my furnace there isn't another company I would even contemplate using.

Had Finan come out to fix a broken drainage pipe in our bathroom. Turned out to be a bigger job thanks to the previous homeowner's terrible DIY plumbing skills. Spoke to Sam at the office who very quickly set me up with the right peeps. The guys came out and were able to fix/replace the problem in less than 4 hours. Super friendly and professional. Will recommend to anyone looking for home service. Thanks again.
