Frequently Asked Questions

Your fireplace is one of the most significant and hardworking features in your home, providing warmth, comfort, and ambiance. Deciding when to replace or install a new fireplace is not a straightforward decision; it hinges on various personal and home needs. Just as with family members, who each have their own unique timelines and paths, fireplaces too can have varying lifespans and needs for upgrades or replacements.

Gone are the days when a fireplace was just a source of warmth!

Choosing a new fireplace is a decision that might come around only once every couple of decades. Therefore, it's crucial to take your time, conduct thorough research, and ask plenty of questions. Nowadays, fireplaces are part of a broader system within your home, contributing not just to warmth but also to the ambiance, energy efficiency, and sometimes even the air quality of your living space.

Ultimately, the type and brand of fireplace you select are significant, yet the professionalism and quality of the company that installs, guarantees, and maintains your fireplace system are paramount. This aspect can greatly influence your satisfaction and the overall performance of your fireplace for years to come.

Servicing a fireplace typically involves several steps to ensure it operates safely and efficiently. Here's a general guide on how to service a fireplace:

  1. Inspect the Exterior Check the exterior of the fireplace for any signs of damage, such as cracks in the masonry or missing mortar joints. Look for any obstructions around the chimney, such as overhanging branches or debris, which could affect ventilation.

  2. Clean the Fireplace Remove any ash, debris, or leftover logs from the firebox. Use a brush and shovel to clean out the ashes, and dispose of them properly. Wipe down the interior of the firebox with a damp cloth to remove any built-up soot or residue.

  3. Inspect the Chimney Examine the chimney for any signs of damage or deterioration, such as cracks, loose bricks, or crumbling mortar. Check the chimney cap and spark arrestor for damage or blockages. If necessary, use a chimney brush to clean out any creosote buildup from the flue.

  4. Check for Drafting Issues Light a small piece of paper and hold it up near the damper opening to check for proper drafting. The smoke should be drawn up the chimney. If smoke enters the room instead, there may be drafting issues that need to be addressed, such as a blocked chimney or improper chimney height.

  5. Inspect Gas Components (for Gas Fireplaces) If you have a gas fireplace, check the pilot light, burner, and gas connections for any signs of damage or malfunction. Test the ignition system to ensure it lights properly, and check for any gas leaks using a leak detection solution or gas detector.

  6. Inspect Ventilation Ensure that the fireplace has proper ventilation to prevent the buildup of carbon monoxide. Make sure the chimney flue is open when using the fireplace and consider installing a carbon monoxide detector nearby for added safety.

  7. Replace Components as Needed If you notice any damaged or malfunctioning components during the inspection, such as cracked chimney liners or faulty gas valves, arrange for repairs or replacements as necessary. It's essential to address issues promptly to prevent further damage and ensure safe operation.

  8. Schedule Regular Maintenance Schedule annual inspections and cleanings with a qualified fireplace technician to ensure your fireplace continues to operate safely and efficiently. A professional technician can provide thorough servicing and identify any potential issues that may need attention.

By following these steps and scheduling regular maintenance, you can keep your fireplace in good condition and enjoy safe and efficient operation for years to come.

Yes, gas fireplaces should be serviced regularly to ensure they operate safely and efficiently. Regular maintenance is important for several reasons:

  1. Safety Gas fireplaces involve combustion, so it's crucial to ensure that all components are functioning properly to prevent the risk of gas leaks, carbon monoxide emissions, or other safety hazards.

  2. Efficiency Regular servicing helps ensure that the fireplace burns fuel efficiently, which can help reduce energy consumption and lower heating costs.

  3. Prevention of Malfunctions Routine maintenance can help identify and address minor issues before they develop into larger problems that require costly repairs.

  4. Prolonged Lifespan Proper maintenance can help extend the lifespan of your gas fireplace by preventing premature wear and tear on components.

Typically, it's recommended to have a gas fireplace serviced annually by a qualified technician. During a service appointment, the technician will inspect and clean the various components of the fireplace, check for any signs of wear or damage, and ensure that everything is functioning correctly. They may also perform tasks such as cleaning the burner and logs, inspecting the gas valve and connections, and testing the ignition system.

In addition to professional servicing, there are some maintenance tasks that homeowners can perform regularly, such as keeping the fireplace and surrounding area clean, checking for visible signs of damage, and ensuring proper ventilation.

Overall, regular servicing is essential for maintaining the safety, efficiency, and longevity of a gas fireplace. It's important to follow the manufacturer's recommendations for maintenance and to consult with a qualified technician if you have any concerns or questions about your fireplace.

f you neglect to clean a gas fireplace regularly, several potential issues can arise, impacting both its performance and safety. Here are some consequences of not cleaning a gas fireplace:

  1. Reduced Efficiency Over time, dust, debris, and soot can accumulate on the burner and other components of the fireplace. This buildup can hinder the flow of gas and air, leading to inefficient combustion and reduced heating performance.

  2. Poor Flame Appearance Accumulated debris on the burner or logs can obstruct the flames, causing uneven or diminished flame appearance. A dirty fireplace may produce smaller, weaker flames, or flames that appear yellow or flicker inconsistently.

  3. Increased Risk of Malfunctions Dirt and debris can interfere with the proper operation of the fireplace's components, such as the burner, ignition system, and gas valve. This can lead to malfunctions, such as difficulty lighting the fireplace, frequent pilot light outages, or issues with flame control.

  4. Safety Hazards Neglecting to clean a gas fireplace can pose safety risks. Accumulated debris, particularly around the burner and pilot light, can create a fire hazard. Additionally, if the venting system becomes blocked or obstructed by debris, it can lead to the buildup of carbon monoxide within the home, which is a potentially deadly gas.

  5. Deterioration of Components Soot and other residues can corrode or damage the fireplace's components over time. This can result in the need for costly repairs or premature replacement of parts.

  6. Unpleasant Odors Dirt, dust, and other residues in the fireplace can produce unpleasant odors when the fireplace is in use, detracting from the enjoyment of the space.

One common problem with fireplaces, especially traditional wood-burning fireplaces, is the buildup of creosote in the chimney. Creosote is a black or brown residue that forms when wood is burned incompletely. Over time, creosote can accumulate on the walls of the chimney and become highly flammable. If not cleaned regularly, creosote buildup can increase the risk of chimney fires.

Other common problems with fireplaces include:

  1. Drafting Issues Poor drafting can lead to smoke entering the room instead of being drawn up the chimney. This can occur due to factors such as chimney blockages, insufficient chimney height, or competing airflows within the home.

  2. Cracks and Damage Masonry fireplaces can develop cracks in the firebox, chimney, or surrounding masonry due to age, weather exposure, or improper installation. Cracks can compromise the structural integrity of the fireplace and increase the risk of fire or carbon monoxide leaks.

  3. Leaks and Moisture Water penetration into the chimney or firebox can cause damage to the masonry, rusting of metal components, and deterioration of chimney liners. Leaks can occur due to damaged chimney caps, cracked masonry, or missing mortar joints.

  4. Faulty Gas Components In gas fireplaces, issues can arise with components such as thermocouples, gas valves, ignition systems, or pilot lights. These problems can prevent the fireplace from igniting or staying lit.

  5. Poor Maintenance Neglecting regular maintenance, such as cleaning and inspections, can lead to a variety of issues, including decreased efficiency, increased risk of fires, and deterioration of fireplace components.

  6. Carbon Monoxide Exposure Malfunctioning or improperly vented fireplaces can produce carbon monoxide, a colorless, odorless gas that can be harmful or fatal if inhaled in high concentrations. Regular maintenance and proper ventilation are essential for preventing carbon monoxide buildup.

To mitigate these problems and ensure safe and efficient operation, it's important to have your fireplace inspected and maintained regularly by a qualified professional. This includes annual chimney inspections, cleaning as needed, and addressing any necessary repairs promptly.

Hands down the best experience and customer service I have received in years. Glyn and Austin came out to help me within a couple of hours of calling for an electrician to figure out why I didn’t have power to my furnace. They were kind and explained every step of the process. I will only use Finan Home Service going forward for all issues that arise in my home. I cannot thank you enough!!

Finana helped with our furnace when it was causing us issues. The team was extremely flexible and accommodating. The guys who came to help out were absolutely professional and super friendly. The team explained what was going wrong, what my options were, and didn't push or try to sell me anything I didn't need yet. When the time does come (hopefully longer than sooner) to replace my furnace there isn't another company I would even contemplate using.

Had Finan come out to fix a broken drainage pipe in our bathroom. Turned out to be a bigger job thanks to the previous homeowner's terrible DIY plumbing skills. Spoke to Sam at the office who very quickly set me up with the right peeps. The guys came out and were able to fix/replace the problem in less than 4 hours. Super friendly and professional. Will recommend to anyone looking for home service. Thanks again.
